In our daily phonics sessions, we aim to introduce children to the pure sound of letters using both Jolly Phonics and Letter and Sound resources. The children begin by learning the letter sounds and names before using these to build words in their writing and blend words in their reading. Alongside this the children learn a variety of key words by sight. Together this ensures that children have the skills required to become confident readers and writers.
Reading is a valuable, lifelong skill and we are keen to develop a love of reading from an early age here at Burnsall.
We are very lucky to have a team of volunteers who come into school to listen to children read. This combines with teacher time to ensure that children are heard reading both individually and in small groups. We encourage the children to choose from a variety of different genres, both fiction and non-fiction and each child reads at a level appropriate for them. As well as being able to read the texts children are encouraged to discuss the book, express their own opinions and to explore hidden meaning within the content of the text.
We use a range of literature from a variety of reading schemes including Oxford Reading Tree and Collins Big Cat. Burnsall has a well-stocked library which is available for all children to choose books from on a regular basis.
